Any woman age 17+ with beginner or or intermediate level English abilities who wishes to learn to read, write and speak English is welcome to register at the Dominican Literacy Center. After signing up for English tutoring, students are contacted by our registrar to set up an appointment. Each student is individually tested at this registration appointment and then placed on a waiting list to be assigned a tutor. Once the student has been registered and has been matched with a tutor, she will begin classes at the DLC and receive materials targeted to her goals and learning level. Each student and her tutor will work together at the DLC for 90 minutes each week.

The Dominican Literacy Center serves students from over 30 countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia, Argentina, Venezuela, Poland, Russia, and Vietnam. All these women have a common desire: to be able to communicate in their new country. Women who come to the Dominican Literacy Center put themselves on the path to a successful life in their new country. Learning English language skills helps the women to become independent individuals, informed mothers, confident workers, and full participants in life in the United States.

This project is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds designated for literacy.
