From our inservice: What is the best way to handle a student’s personal or emotional problems?

As discussed at the inservice, your commitment and first priority is to help your student learn to speak English. If she is talking about personal problems with you past the initial 5 to 10 minutes at the beginning of class, ask if the two of you could work on your lesson first and schedule a time for more talking during the last ten minutes of class. If your student wants help with her problem, ask her if she would be comfortable with you sharing her problem with us (Alison or the Sisters) so that we can provide resources and referrals that can help her.
