Become a Trained Tutor for Women’s ESL
Approximately 150 women volunteer tutors come to the Center every week to partner with women who wish to learn to read, write, and speak English. Volunteers must be 18+ years of age and have a high school diploma, but no prior teaching or foreign language knowledge is required. All tutors receive 15 hours of training (six hours in-person and nine hours remote), as well as a yearly in-service luncheon and on-going support from the Dominican Literacy Center staff, who are always on-site. Tutors meet with students weekly, using ESL books, writing exercises, conversation practice, grammar exercises and a computer program provided by the Literacy Center.

Citizenship Volunteer Program
Becoming a new U.S. Citizen is a very important goal for many of our students at the DLC. We assist men and women in the Aurora area preparing for their Naturalization test through 12 week classes, held twice a week for 2 hours. Citizenship classes meet at the St. Therese school building across the parking lot from the DLC. Classes are taught by staff members and trained volunteers. Each classroom teacher commits to teaching a two-hour class each week for 12 weeks in the Fall and 12 weeks in the Spring. Volunteers are also recruited for one-on-one for mock interviews with students who have approaching test dates.

Evening Classes: Monday and Thursday evening, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Citizenship classes run from September through April.

ESL Tutor Training is held twice a year, in August and in January. The training is free; the cost of the book (which you will keep) is $20.00.
Citizenship volunteer training is held at the end of the summer on an as-needed basis.
